Nemirovsky has a unique way of painting the landcsape of time and events so that you clearly experience the the humanity she has captured for her works. This is a story that was never quite finished by the author...her daughters salvaged the pages of the manuscript after the death of their mother in Auschwitz in 1942. Her previous novel of note is Suite Francaise.
I love a novel that reaches high literary standards without challenging my ability to enjoy the characters, surroundings, and story. This one let's you have it all.
